QuoteThere is a lot to be said for a solid company and a steady pay check
I've been here 15 years and I am well paid.
The current management is driving me mad and I frequently think about moving on or retiring ahead
of schedule.
However, when I factor in my paycheck, and the drive that would be required to duplicate it elsewhere,
I grit my teeth and soldier on. My short term plan is to outlast my current manager.
Maybe the next one will be better

That's part of what keeps me here....the reality is, this is the best gig I have ever had...I am just looking to get a new challenge out of it...if he ever retires, I take over the role...I already commute 45 miles one way, pay and bene's are really good...heck, with all the issues my wife had these past couple months, I was told, "take care of your family first"...so many pluses....I just need a challenge mentally

We interviewed 2 guys in Spetember, either one of them would have been a good fit and able to do the job...though I had a preference of one over the other.....instead of getting one in the door, they're out there still...somewhere in his head he thinks he just just ask and they'll be dying to come to work here...

It's a mindset that in this day just doesn't work any more.

So I keep spinning my wheels...

I'm just burned out
About 7 years ago they hired a boy genius who was going to "take us to the next level"
He spent $300K on Catia, dumped 5 of out 7 Mastercam seats, spent millions moving machines around into work cells, fired half my Mastercam guys, did his best to fire me, signed LTAs which nearly bankrupted us and continue to blow holes
in our bottom line, I could go on for days..
They finally fired him, but he did take us to the next level, one level below the basement floor.
Since he left I've had three more managers and it's been a long hard slog trying to get out of the hole
he put us in.  Its been a very rough 7 years and it's kicked the give a shit right out of me.
I used to think I would work as long as I was heathy and capable of doing good work. Now I'm just counting the days till the weekend

Shops had to struggle through covid and now inflation is making people want more money because they can't afford their mortgages anymore.   :shitfan:

What's a mortgage? :P

I don't miss the stress of working at all.

Gotta go. Rifleman is coming on.

I'm only 56 but if I am being honest, I am looking at my finances and trying to figure out what the earliest is that I can retire....I don't need to be a millionaire....just want to be able to keep a roof over my head, food on my table, pay my bills and take an occasional vacation....

When I can feel comfortable that I can do that....I'll pull the plug....but unless something goes VERY, VERY wrong, I will not be working into my 70's like my aforementioned "Bossman"

Flycut

I will probabbly keep working till the end.
I can't picture a time where I can afford to retire.

this Friday should have been my last day, but a medical issue has made me hold off , but as soon as that is settled my 2 weeks is in

You have to eliminate debt for the most part to retire.

As long as I am able, I will continue to work as long as I am mentally able to do the job. My job isn't terribly demanding in the physical sense.

Besides that, living in the People's Republik of Kommieforniastan, my property taxes alone by the time I would be old enough to retire, they will be probably in excess of $1,500/mo. even if my house was fully paid for. We carry very little debt (probably less than $2k at any given time) Our cars are paid for. Just the mortgage, utilities, and living expenses. There's very little chance of us paying the house off because we had to start over 7 years ago after my Father In-Law needed a place to stay. Our old house that would be paid off now, was too small at the time. So unless one/some of my kids gets outtta dodge, we're stuck here, and I'll need to work until I'm dead.

I'm only a few years away from paying my condo off and being 100% debt free and I'm still going to have to work until I'm dead.
I'll go back to being a conservative, when conservatives go back to being conservative.

I have the age and means to retire but I have a very good job, a great boss and program the toughest parts. As long as I don't have to get the jab I'll be here for a while.
