It's one of the mysteries I cannot explain. Though oddly, American Jews have a pro-communist bent which just flabbergasts me. But you look at Pre AND Post-WWII American Jews and they were pretty solid Pro-Communist even as late as the the 60's racial tension was heating up.

Here in my neck of the woods, Catholics are mostly Democrats, like 80/20.

Even more interesting is the lengths they will go to when you point out that the Catholic Church strictly forbids abortion, yet the Democratic Party position is now 100% pro-choice, and has been for decades.
And I remember clearly when the line was drawn in the sand by the DNC.

The last real pro-life Democrat was Bob Casey Sr. who was Governor of PA in the early 90's when Bill Clinton ran for President, and Governor Casey was chosen to be a keynote speaker that year at the Democratic National Convention.

When he submitted the initial draft of his speech to the DNC, they asked him to remove his pro-life comments since they did not align with the party platform.

To his credit, Governor Casey refused to back down from his pro-life stance, which was a principle he firmly believed was shared by a majority of Democrats (and Catholics like himself) at that time.
In light of his principled decision to not change his speech, the DNC decided to go with a different speaker.
