Honestly. Truthfully. I do not know why big tech is hellbent on genuinely building Terminators. There must be a godcomplex int here that says "Sure, I know what could happen, but when I do it it can't possibly happen."

Quote from: neurosis on April 15, 2025, 08:06 AMThe survey was done by Cato, not TFT. If I had posted that graph straight from Cato, would you have worked so hard to discredit the results, even though they weren't trying to make any points when they did the survey? :D

I know that TFT does have a point, but is their point invalid?

If I were to have taken that survey, I would have had a difficult time answering question #1 because honestly, other than the argument of national security, I'm not sure that we would be better off if manufacturing came back to the US. I don't know how many jobs would be created vs how much of manufacturing would be automated? Would the jobs left be high, or low paying jobs?

I would have answered no to #2 because even though I do work in manufacturing, and it was great when I came in to the trade, I'm not sure that I would see it as a great career move in 2025. Average machinists in the Seattle area barely make enough to scrape by and god forbid you have any unforeseen medical issues.

I've been programming since I was 22 so I've made a good living for myself, but not everyone lands a programming job in this trade.

I don't know much about other areas of manufacturing or other areas, so my opinion may be skewed based on location and cost of living.

There is a lot of conflicting data, or at least it appears to be conflicting data from that poll. So a person who wanted to show support for Trump's policies could use the data that supports him. If a person wanted to show disdain for Trump's policies they could show data to make him look wrong.

https://www.cato.org/sites/cato.org/files/2024-08/Globalization%20Survey_2024.pdf

as an example:

61% thinks that trade with foreign nations makes us richer and safer
63% thinks that foreign trade has hollowed out the middle class in the US.

68% think americans are getting cheated by foreign trade deals
58% think that global trade is good for their own standard of living
(this makes me think that a large part of the people surveyed were not in the middle class)

In March, Honda became one of the first tariff dominos to fall when the company scrapped plans to make the Civic Hybrid in Mexico and moved production to Indiana. Now, according to Reuters, the automaker is looking to increase U.S. production by some 30% over the next two-to-three years.

As a direct response to President Donald Trump's auto tariffs, which would add a 25% tax to all imported vehicles, Honda wants 90% of all cars sold in the U.S. to be made in the U.S. The news was first reported this morning by Nikkei.

Nvidia to Invest At Least $100 Billion to Make AI Chips in U.S.

And that's just the initial investment.

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Nvidia announced Monday that it will produce its artificial intelligence super computers in the United States for the first time.

The tech giant said it has commissioned more than one million square feet of manufacturing space to build and test its specialized Blackwell chips in Arizona and AI supercomputers in Texas — part of an investment the company said will produce up to half a trillion dollars of AI infrastructure in the next four years.

"The engines of the world's AI infrastructure are being built in the United States for the first time," Nvidia founder Jensen Huang said in a statement. "Adding American manufacturing helps us better meet the incredible and growing demand for AI chips and supercomputers, strengthens our supply chain and boosts our resiliency."

They should have left Trumps name out of that article. I feel like the focus is too much on the criticism of "Trumps policies" and not  - would be really be better off if we moved manufacturing back to the US.

I'll go back to being a conservative, when conservatives go back to being conservative.

We just ordered a new ABB robot to go with the Multus B250 we ordered last week. We requested a quote from our ABB dist. They have to get a quote from ABB. We issued a PO the same day we got the quote. A couple days later the Dist emailed me saying ABB sent an order acknowledgement that had a 7% tariff charge, approx $5K. We said you should have quoted it that way pushed back. ABB is digging in and won't budge. I know we are not the biggest customer, but this will be our 15th ABB in 7 years. What a shitty way to treat a loyal customer.

If you have 15 of them already, they should treat you better than that!
Can you try Kuka or Fanuc?

In the world of robots, 15 isn't very many. Auto OEMS and tier ones, food service, etc. all order dozens a ta time.

We could try something different but then it would be different. We have one Doosan robot now and only a couple people know how to run it. In the end we will probably eat the charge, just not very happy about it.

They know, you'll pay it because standardisation is a wonderful thing.
However, i'd be looking around hard, at trying to find a used one that's suitable....

In your desire to bag on a "Trumpster" as you called me, again you missed the point. The point was not the tariff, it was that they didn't quote it, then sent us a bill with the tariff added. We import products from overseas that will now have added tariff costs. We will most likely have to have to raise prices to our customers as well. The tariffs on Chinese stuff is potentially making us look at other countries for sourcing as well as domestic suppliers.

If they already had the robot in inventory, I would say its bullshit. If they are having to ship one in & pay a tariff to do so, then I would say you would have to eat it. Problem with changing tariff's on a daily basis is price will change on the daily also. I wouldn't be surprised to see quotes having that verbiage on them soon.
