Quote from: Smit post_id=4550 time=1611498315 user_id=66Do you really prefer to have a President who misleads the country? Who tells us it's not going to impact us, it's going to go away when the weather warms up, it's already going away on its own, etc, etc? Even when he knows goddamn well it's not true?

Is that president a Republican or Democrat?

I think that you're reading too much in to my sarcasm.   You asked which is preferred.  In a room full of republicans, I think that you already know the answer.

Ah, I see. Yes, I know which is going to get the most votes here. I don't expect to change anybody's mind.

I just express my opinion and hope every once in a while it makes somebody think just a little bit outside of their little box.

The majority of people seem to want someone who will tell them what they want to hear, that they needn't exert any additional effort or undergo any additional inconvenience.

The American people as a whole DO NOT want THE truth! If they wanted THE truth our nation would not be in $10's of TRILLIONS in debt. If the American people wanted THE truth Russia would not own a significant portion of our Uranium production. If the American people wanted THE truth, China still would not be able to launch a satellite, ergo the ability to launch ICBM's at us - which they are building more of as we speak ( https://www.janes.com/defence-news/news-detail/china-to-field-more-nuclear-weapons-that-can-target-the-united-states-says-report">https://www.janes.com/defence-news/news ... ays-report">https://www.janes.com/defence-news/news-detail/china-to-field-more-nuclear-weapons-that-can-target-the-united-states-says-report ) . If the American people wanted THE truth, Facebook, Twitter, etc... would not be the digital wastelands they are today. If the American people wanted THE truth, reputable news sources would be plentiful. And lastly, if Americans wanted THE truth, they would hold their elected leaders responsible for their tragic f-ups regardless of party affiliation instead of leaving them in office for tragic decade after tragic decade.

So no Smit, I wholeheartedly disagree with  your asessment that

. No you don't. You say you do. But you don't.

Quote from: Smit post_id=4550 time=1611498315 user_id=66...For reference Google what's happening in Wuhan now. It seems they're pretty much back to normal. Of course the cultural differences in our countries are going to prevent the U.S. from clamping down on society the way they did but we certainly could have done a better job of communicating the need to take preventative measures instead of politicizing the pandemic the way we did.

If by "cultural differences" you mean our culture would frown upon welding the doors shut on an apartment complex that's experiencing an outbreak of the 'Rona, then sure.

A .gov that exercises near total control of their populace will fare better in a situation like this. I personally find the amount of praise heaped on China for their handling of the pandemic by those in our media and some politicians to be disconcerting. Theirs is NOT a system would should be seeking to emulate in any way.

Yes, that's exactly what I mean.  :D

I wouldn't want to see the U.S. emulate that either. But I would like to see the citizens of this country voluntarily do what is necessary to achieve similar results.

That would be difficult under the very best circumstances. It would require clear and honest assessment of where we are, where we want to be, and what is required to get there.

Politicizing everything about the virus to the point nearly half the population refuses to do anything to stop the spread of the disease has led us to where we are today.

From my observation it looks like 90% of people are wearing masks.  But that's just around here

We are nearly at 100% compliance here in Vermont. Must be a total coincidence that we also have the lowest infection rate in America.
